DO YOU HAVE HELPLESS EMPATHIZERS OR COMPASSIONATE DOERS?
by Edward Murphy

Has empathy training unintentionally turned people into overwhelmed bystanders rather than empowered problem-solvers?

Empathy training, when done right, is meant to cultivate understanding and connection with others’ emotions.

However, if it is not paired with action-oriented training, it can lead to empathetic distress, where people feel others’ pain deeply but don’t know how to respond effectively.

Compassion training emphasizes both feeling and action, and it encourages people to not just empathize but also take meaningful steps to help. Some research even suggests that excessive empathy without boundaries can lead to burnout, while compassion fosters resilience and engagement.

If training stops at “feeling others’ pain” without equipping people with problem-solving tools, we create “helpless empathizers.” But if it includes skill-building for meaningful action, we create “compassionate doers” who make a real difference.

What’s your take? Have you seen empathy training fall into this trap?

In summary, transitioning from empathy to compassion in the workplace involves moving from emotional understanding to actionable support, thereby requiring a higher level of employee effort and commitment.
